The Lord's Prayer

The Lord's Prayer has no doubt been translated into more other languages than any other text. It has of course been translated into Arapaho as well. But what does it actually say in Arapaho? Find out here. The first line gives the standard English, the second line gives the Arapaho, and the third line gives the literal meaning of the Arapaho.

Our Father who art in Heaven,
beehiiniisonoonibéíhi-n, nenéénin hihcébe’ héentoo-n,
you who are the father of all, you who are up above,

hallowed be thy name.
he-níísih’íít toh-béteenóó-’.
your name is holy/sacred.

Thy kingdom come,
héet-ííne’etiiwóóhu-n heetíh-no’useenóó-’,
where you live and dwell, let it be that it arrive [here],

thy will be done,
hínee heesí3ecóó-n heetíh-néé’eesóó-’,
that way you think, let it be so,

on earth as it is in Heaven.
teesííhi’ bííto’ówu-u’ hínee héesóó-’ hihcébe’ hínee héétoo-n.
on the earth like the way it is there above where you are.

Give us this day our daily bread.
cíh-biin-éi’ee nuhu’ híísi’ hééyowuuhu’ ne-bíí3ihiin-ínoo.
give us each day our food.

And forgive us our trespasses,
heetíh-kóuutenowuun-éi’een neenéis-nóntoo-ni’.
let it be that you remove it from us, whatever mistakes me make.

as we forgive those who trespass against us.
heetíh-kóuutenowuun-óóno’ hei-cíí-niini’ihéiitoon-ín.
let it be that we remove it from those who do not treat us well.

And lead us not into temptation,
cih-’oo’éíxoh-éi’ee héet-noxóxhoo3óó-’ nuhu’ héet-wotóxoobéé-’ hííne’etíít,
bring us together [away from] where this filthy life is tempting,

But deliver us from evil.
heetíh-cih-nóókootíxoh-éi’een héet-cíí-ni’óó-’.
let it be that you bring us home [from] where it is not good.

Amen.
néé’eesóó-’.
that is how it is.
